Uber, Lyft and DoorDash Drivers in Las Vegas: Do You Have the Right Auto Insurance?
Driving for a rideshare or delivery platform puts your vehicle to work in ways a standard personal auto policy was never designed to cover. The gap between what your personal insurer covers and what the platform provides may leave you financially exposed during portions of your shift that don’t fall into either category.
The Three Phases of Rideshare and Delivery Driving
Coverage varies dramatically depending on what you are doing at any given moment. The general breakdown looks like this:
- App off: Your personal auto policy applies as it normally would.
- App on, waiting for a request (Phase 1): Platform coverage is typically limited to contingent liability only, and your personal insurer may deny claims for commercial activity. In Nevada, transport network companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft are required to provide contingent liability coverage of at least state-required minimums per person and per accident for bodily injury, and state-required minimums for property damage during this phase, but only if your personal insurance does not apply or is exhausted.
- Ride or delivery in progress (Phases 2 & 3): The platform carries its highest level of coverage. In Nevada, TNCs or drivers must carry at least $1,500,000 in commercial liability coverage per incident once a trip is accepted through passenger drop-off. This primary liability coverage may still leave gaps in collision or comprehensive protection for your own vehicle unless you carry a rideshare endorsement.
What Your Personal Policy Likely Does Not Cover
Many personal auto policies exclude coverage when your vehicle is being used for hire. If you are logged into the app and involved in an accident during the waiting phase, you may face a denied claim and out-of-pocket repair costs.
Rideshare Endorsement or Commercial Coverage
A rideshare endorsement added to your personal policy bridges the gap during the app-on, waiting phase. Some drivers, particularly those who drive full-time, may be better served by a commercial auto policy. Las Vegas streets stay busy around the clock, and high-mileage commercial use accelerates wear and significantly increases exposure.
